I wouldn't have believed it either but the dent was similar to what you would get when hitting the centre of a plank with the edge of another in a glancing way. It was not deep but visually obvious. It took lots of polishing out, but I was doing it manually as I tend to be careful with a windscreen. It may obviously have been a strange shaped chip, or even massive wear over a short length, but without high magnification it didn't appear so! I presumed at the time that as glass is a supercooled liquid it has strange behaviour in some circumstances, but I know little about it. Obviously a sharp point impact would have instantly shattered it but this was a spread out blow.
