From the bottom the solder joints look factory so I dont think anything has been replaced. The smoke was coming from the area around the heat sink.

Not sure about the loading ring motor. I just see and hear the video head spinning, then the left tape reel moves a little bit and then the video head stops spinning.

When I power up the machine I do hear a wirr and the right tape reel moves a little bit.

I have never owned a Betamax machine so dont fully under stand how they work but I do have basic electronics skills. I will have a proper look on the weekend and take some pics.
