Well, sounds like what you've been using them for is far more ambitiious than anything I have attempted to do so there's nothing much I can tell you about them.

I've never ever tried to use a Pi headless so I'd be interested to know whether the above utilities can actually be used that way (neither utility requires the opto interface hardware to be connected in order to run).
