I’ve always used a scope to view the response from a Philips test tape that has a 4khz tone which then goes to a frequency counter. It’s then easy to set the speed to get the 4khz output and leave it running to see if there is any variation over time. If there are dropouts caused by headware or wow it’s easy to see.
