Maplin do offer a Click & Collect service which presumably checks stock in the chosen store to avoid a wasted journey and should ensure the correct item is purchased even if a non-technical person is collecting on your behalf. Goods are available within 30 mins.
I haven't used it myself yet but find the similar services at Toolstation, Screwfix etc useful.
