Thanks for your replies.

I've attached a couple of photos. The red arrow in the view of the mechanism shows the connection which is high resistance.

Bypassing it with a wire jumper as suggested would be a good solution, however it might make it difficult to fit the back cover.

I might try a jumper with the back off for a while to see if it solves the problem, then go from there.
