Do you mean it has no electronics at all? The bare tape head has an output broadly similar to a mic or moving magnet cartridge, so will need a preamp to feed into a gram input. The preamp needs to apply equalisation too.

The 3 speed BSR TD10 is bigger than the TD2 (it takes 7" spools). The TD2 can be fitted with 2 or 4 track heads, but as a budget deck it wasn't used for 4 track much.
