Can't you connect the mains lead to the on/off switch, perhaps disconnecting the pins for the original mains connector for safety?

Beware though, it's common for the fuse(s) to be before the switch, don't inadvertently bypass them.

I don't have a circuit of this set for reference, I'm just going off the pictures in this thread.
