In the newer US wiring practices an RCD or as we refer to as a GFCI, Ground Fault Current Interrupter. They can be incorporated on every circuit, if desired. They're available in the receptacle form or the circuit breaker form. They only disable a single circuit instead the whole electrical system in the building.
Our electrical code is updated every few years to enhance safety for the consumer.
