Yes, it's a thyristor (silicon controlled rectifier or SCR). I think the BT106 (still available) is a suitable replacement for the BT100. Back in the day there were loads of alternatives such as the TV106, the RS one you mention and the 2N4444 in a plastic package, the latter being about the most reliable.
