Poppydog, is your radio a Perdio Town and Country? I have one of these and simply use a six pack AA battery holder filled with alkaline cells. Home Bargains sell a 20 pack of JCB brand AAs for £3. The trouble with rechargable cells is that they only give 1.2 volts. As others have suggested, it is a good idea to include a fuse.
