I was born in 83
It was similar in Canada growing up we had a late 60's Zenith color tube tv in the basement and a early 80's Philips that lasted us till around 1998.

as a kid i wanted nothing more then a small color set for my room (to play nes ) i ended up with a Radio Shack 4.5” B&W Television Portable
and later a larger blue colored black and white Panasonic. I found being tossed out during clean up week (it's one day a year where you can toss out most items and the garbage men will pick it up)

my dad did buy a color portable tv from a friend but it was broken with a collapsed screen. he never got around to getting it fixed.
