It maybe that the chip type has been purposely removed to protect the IP - I have seen this done on some designs. Most likley though, it has just faded or was badly marked from new. Occasionally it is possible to make faded idents temporarily visible by wiping some IP over the surface of the chip

I wouldn't mind a tin of ident revealing Intellectual Property to replace what unhelpful manufacturers have hidden.
It could also help with quite a few old valves........
