70lb was the order of the day in my day. But nothing to what I encountered out in ex Rhodesia rail ,where the routes were in 140 lb. 70 ex POT was joined as per 40 ,with twisted sleeves. 140 was joined with a massive crimp tool . The only othr acceptable way was to use screw cap insulators ( 16's ??) and make a soldered joint. Great excuse for a brew. My lads would gather some wood, and make a fire, then the kettle was set up, and then the massive soldering iron put in. Tea up, the iron was wiped with a cleaning block ( sal ammoniac ,I seem to remember) and the joint soldered .
