Or at least try Freecycle! I haven't had to go to the tip (sorry, 'household waste recycling centre') for ages for anything until I've built up a stock of nasty chemicals or engine oil. Everything else gets passed on through Freecycle, even if it's as apparently odd as half a tin of paint.
I'd certainly be glad if the GP or dentist had such things in their waiting rooms instead of aged gossip rags... ;-)
