Regarding the tripler - you can leave the extra wire out, but some circuits required you to connect it to the input pin. If it works left off, then that's the best bet!
These were sold via Comet and were quite competitively priced. They compare well with the other imports of the period, and had the advantage of a transistor (as opposed to thyristor) line output stage so were easier to service.
Perhaps not a good idea to compare it with the 697, though....
