The problem is that these sites get set up by enthusiasts with little IT expertise. They become popular and grow, but the administration doesn't get any better. Eventually the hosting company or domain registrar will step in and shut it down.

The contents of the site are very likely to be stored somewhere, but it will take someone with a decent level of expertise to revive it. One solution may be to host it as a static site with readonly access, but this is still problematic if it's been compromised.
