Back in the day we used to get replacement anode caps that had an EHT rectifier in them. The theory was that the potted diode would have shorted and even if it recovered it wouldn't cause too much of an EHT increase. Not ideal, of course, but it kept hundreds of these nice sets running for reasonable money.
