I would also add the role Ebay has played the last few years in buying materials for projects. I rarely use my local one in Rugby even though it is only a mile away due to poor stock levels.
The ease of buying components in decent quantity (i.e not 2 1N4001 diodes in stock!!) the vast range of components, reasonably cheap prices and assemblies available and in some cases next day delivery (many cases free delivery as well) must have seriously dented Maplins share of the shrinking electronics hobbyists demand.
