It appears a more modern version of the OP's sought-after piece, as others including Station-X have mentioned, is a round push-fitting with the registered mark 'Starlock'. They're for retaining shafts without threading and locknuts. The 'Starlock' type are made by this outfit: https://www.bakfin.com/

While the OP's object isn't a 'Starlock', but a generic form of the same idea, it looks like Lawrence's catalogue has the exact type as ssaunders is looking for on the page he mentioned. A good resource, Lawrence!
