In order for the monitor to work, the main PCB needs to be producing horizontal sync pulses. That's what we are aiming to find out, whether it is or not, in part so that you don't have to go chasing after a nonexistent fault in the monitor.

If there are no horizontal sync pulses, then the problem is on the main board. Either way, your scope will come in useful not just for this job but for a whole host of other jobs. Next to a meter, it is the most useful piece of test gear you could ever have.
