The item pictured at the foot of my post #2 is basically the circuit Joe ThePillenwerfer described. My contribution was to miniturise it using a sandwich of two fragments of perforated project board so it fits into the tiny eBay trinket case shown.
I'll gladly post the layout I used next week and if nothing else, following Joe's instructions will teach you a useful skill; how to programme Atmel microcontrollers
