Thanks all for your invaluable help. After careful consideration yes, I will have to agree, the task does look rather pointless. I'm afraid my ingenuity will probably kneel before the bearings, no idea how to even start, and I'll be left with a very decorative and quite big biscuit/peanut/snack box. There's a shop nearby that converts all types of records to mp3s, so if I ever feel the need to put together a very glitzy oversized mp3 player, I'm all set. The current feeling is one of despair, though, so I'll probably just throw a blanket over it until I can get to grips with the fact that this has been doomed from the start, I was just too foolish to see it.
