Default Goblin 844 Teasmade

I have just resurrected my mother's old teasmade. It works, but a lot of boiling water spurts out of the 2-3mm hole in the kettle lid while it fills the teapot.

Can anyone suggest a cure except blocking it?

There is a quite hard flat (plastic?) washer round the outside of the lid. Is something missing between the metal lid and the plastic handle? Should there be a pressure safety valve?
