Bryan,
your Model 8 Mk ? is a specific NATO version (designated TS1 not Model 8).
It's actually a Model 8 Mk II, modified for a 3-10-30 rather than a 2.5-10-25 range sequence, and with the extreme reistance ranges (L.R and INS) excluded.
They also dropped decibels from the scale (although with a 3-10-30 range sequence it might have been appropriate to keep it).

if the quality problems had only reached the stitching ....
With a little bit of the original MacAdie ethos, the Model 5 would have been an excellent meter, but this was the Thorn environment : go for new unproven technology to save cost, and ... pay the price !
