My long suffering (about 33 years) 8X (Panclimatic), with metal outer rear case and green carrying case (handle now getting a bit tatty) is No. 3130-C-7637. It had a replacement rectifier about 31 years ago after starting to read low, other than that it keeps taking whatever I throw at it.....

I also have a back-up (and little used) 8 mark 5, bearing serial number "40501 8V/11/76" on a sticker on the side of the case. It has a leather case with self destructing stitching; there seems to have been a quality control problem here!
