As Jon has said, a synthesiser would be worth considering - at least while you're evaluating the radio. For this kind of thing, I find one of those cheap Chinese si5351 boards combined with a Bus Pirate and a PC to be invaluable. Stick those two on a breadboard and you can have any frequency between about 8KHz and 200MHz with a few keystrokes.
