I think Stone's shop faces approximately west so the H aerial on the roof appears to be directed southward. The Sutton Coldfield transmitter opened in December 1949 but if I've got my directions right the aerial should be pointing towards the camera for optimum signal strength. Perhaps there was no need to change its direction from Alexandra Palace for good reception from the new transmitter. It's still a bit odd that no aerial is visible in the 1937 picture. I can't imagine that the photographer would fade it out for that scene.
