I`m also still in the learning stage . I`ve only done maybe 25 units over the last 8 or 9 months so I`m still very new to it . I`m still struggling with reading schematics a bit , I tend to use the diagrams more than the schematic and I really shouldn`t but its gets me through in the end . As for the transistors , germanium aren`t necessarily any more vulnerable than the silicon ones . It really depends on what they are being used for . In these circuits , the large germanium can transistors are in the power amp section , and the silicon ones are in the preamp sections . Checking the voltages will tell you if they are good or not without having to pull them to test them on the bench . I`m actually working on a 4308 at the moment , (same board) mine has no record , so I`m scratching my head over one too .lol .
