A really posh output level meter would be true RMS so it will read properly on noise so you can check S/N ratio.
A really really posh output level meter would also have a notch filter that can be switched in for doing SINAD and measuring S/N ratio with a signal to entertain AGC and AVC systems.
There's a whole range of possibilities from the basic to the elaborate.
