And those investigations are now complete. Removed each one from its pcb, used an external PSU and using the manufacturer's data sheet as a guide, configured each AD584 in its 'basic mode'. Result: output voltages low - in both examples.
For me, that's conclusive. Salvaged a few bits; the rest went into the rubbish bin. It'll have to be the total D-I-Y route now; I've learnt my lesson when buying from certain sources.
