Sorry for delay in responding to all your comments - out of the country with work.
Many Many thanks for all the good info - going to take time to digest it all but think I'm going to get a professional transfer done first - then maybe get a player to play with when free time allows. At least you all have widened my opportunities for a alternative deck.
I'm done with this issue now as you guys have excelled yourselves - I'm heading over to the sticky thread 'tape to CD' as these will be gifts.
