Reverse is needed because not all the wax cells are perfectly aligned.
I have a manual 3 frame extractor and I can always get that extra half kilo by spinning backwards. It's easy to test anyway. Try weighing a full frame, spin it one way only and weigh again, fit the frame back into the extractor and spin in reverse. Apart from seeing the honey coming out, you can re weigh the frame and you will see it's much lighter.
