Rocket tech was well established by the end of the war, but Sputnik didn't go up till 1957. That was the trigger. The Yanks put a man on the Moon within 12 years.

The technical advances needed to achieve this political feat would have still happened, even if the Apollo computer turned out the size of a refrigerator.
