You may encounter a problem in that TVs of that era have no way of changing the aspect ratio, and DVD players assume they're talking to a 16:9 TV. This won't really matter with 4:3 material like Plan 9, but you may have to put up with watching 16:9 material squeezed down into the 4:3 frame, with tall thin people. Some DVD players have more options to control this than others.
