Another useful solvent is the stuff used for glueing plastic drain pipes, particularly the one made by Osma.

The resulting weld is every bit as strong as the original, but one word of warning, usually if you get an adhesive such as Araldite where you don't want it you can wipe it off before it sets. These solvent cements are absolutely unforgiving and will mark any surface instantly. Any attempt to wipe it off will only make matters worse.

Unfortunately they will not work on bakelite.
