Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it but I think the noise is probably electronic in origin. About a second after I switch the machine on there is a rising moaning sound through the loudspeaker which quickly decays to a much lower level but is still there in the left channel. A dodgy electrolytic? (I have no idea really).
