Thanks for the link Lawrence - most useful.

I've just measured the space in the back of the set and you're correct in terms of the space - as you say, a 200mm long battery would fit snugly with no risk of sloshing about. Not having found any other scan, I simply made the replica from the one that I'd found, to the dimensions given. Clearly too short it seems, but the width and depth do seem to be the correct size.

Forum member 'Batterymaker' doesn't have a PP8 scan on his site as far as I can tell, but interestingly, this YouTube video of his RT1 clearly shows a full length battery:

200mm does look awfully long for a battery - I don't recall having ever seen an original one.
