I bought one a couple of years ago to throw into our camping box. Reception, when you're away from the noise of civilisation, is quite respectable for the size/complexity of the radio.
IIRC the radio uses a DSP chip with volume and tuning both achieved using potentiometers (band selection via a chain of resistors).
