I attempted to remove the tube base insulator and whilst it did waggle slightly, was resistant to coming off. So for the moment I let it be as I don't want to break the tube! I may try again later with a little warmth to try and coax it off.

There does not appear to be any sparking within the tube, but will do a more thorough test tonight. I will also try and locate a spare K536 tripler on the off chance there is some kind of problem in the focus ladder behind the symptoms. I see Donberg have this one and this one.
