Years ago if they had to removed it would have been ripped off and new metal plate bought. Today its much more difficult and time consuming.
Could you put it in a plastic bag, placed in the freezer, hopefully making the glue brittle. After 24 hours work knob between finger and thumb. The knob brights are often missing due to the glue deteriorating with age. Personally I would not risk using heat, Its so easy to do damage to the set.
