You try de-gaussing the slug with a CRT de-gaussing wand, but I would be very surprised if it had retained any permanent magnetism.

On a vaguely related topic I became convinced that an iron core in a vintage American power transformer had changed and lost permeablity, because it was affecting a nearby CRT objectionably under the same operating conditions as it would have had when new. So I had considered the core might have "degraded" in some way but I could not dream up any plausible mechanism of how it could have happened.

So if that slug of yours had degraded, from its new state, it would be good to figure out how and why, but that might be very difficult and fall into some less known area of nuances of complex magnetic materials.
