Frank, that's sound advice about doing some checks before spending any money just in case there are expensive items that have failed, so that's where I will begin.

I have bought the technical datasheet for the deck (thanks Lawrence) and it appears to be spot on.

I have also come across the excellent guide on this forum about restoring vintage record players, so I can follow that too.
