Phil,
Whilst 5G/2126 is undoubtedly an Air Ministry Section Reference, I don't think you're on the right track with A.P.19744.
I propose that that is an Admiralty Pattern reference, not an Air Publication number.
It's quite likely that these meters were supplied to both Services, so possibly a movement from an Admiralty example ended up in an Air Ministry example?
Also, I've never seen an Air Ministry item marked with an Air Publication reference.
I've attached an example of one made by Evershed & Vignoles in a wooden case, for interest.
