In the 80s, I worked on the Transcription Service programme "Taliking About Music". Quite frequently, the producer and presenter would go out with a Pro Walkman and gather material which we then dubbed to quarter inch (from the machine on which it was recorded) and edited. Suffice it to say that the fidelity of the Sony was not the quality bottleneck...
