This may be a bit of paranoia and unfair to Mr Scott, but a dealer may be shy of revealing the previous owner of an item. You can imagine: 'and how much did you pay for it'? 'The *&^^%$ paid me xxx'!
I did buy an HRO from flat over a junk shop, at good price, and was told 'it belonged to my dad', which I wasn't sure about! I think that sounds better than 'I was paid to take it away in a house clearance', etc.

I wonder if one avenue may be an article on the set in your local paper, if they are interested as a thing of history, and a request for info on previous owners. You may find it belonged to someone's auntie, etc.
