Hi John
Well something went wrong with the original mains transformer, but I suspect that blackened area is mainly caused by the heat rising from the rectifier and OP valve and attracting dirt there.

I have also uploaded a video of the radio taken last night demonstrating the crowded MW band. https://youtu.be/Jsxpa8tSAt0 .
As mentioned before tuning the many close stations is tight but it is quite possible to resolve the many stations with care.
