A reasonable quality zinc carbon lantern battery has a capacity of nearly 10 AH.
Alkaline lantern batteries exist but are uncommon and often expensive.

A good quality LED bulb is worth fitting, and readily reversed if original type bulb is wanted.
A 1 watt led bulb should give several dozen hours service from a zinc carbon battery.
Point noted, thanks. My reason for using four rechargeable D cells is because I have them lying around and some plastic D cell holders too. Not much soldering is needed and two double D cell holders can easily be coupled together. Not sure if a fuse is required though.
Another option might be to use four AA NIMH cells in which case one holder is required. Sponge or similar material could be used inside the space to prevent the battery holder from flopping around inside the torch.
