Hi Neil. Initially I would not do this. Concentrate on getting the circuit working as it is drawn. You can always play around with it later. Usually when the supply to the pentode is taken from the reservoir, this is taken to a tap on the primary of the output transformer which serves to cancel out the higher level of hum that would otherwise be heard. This is only an ECL80..a relatively low power valve so if you use a 5 watt resistor for smoothing, it should run only slightly warm.
