...All achieved with a copper oxide rectifier, which they saw fit to replace with germanium diodes when the MkIII was introduced. I have only ever had to replace one of the former, and it's under-performance was backed up by the appearance of corrosion on the ends.

You notice how the early Mod 8/9 pamphlets are open about BSS89/1954 Sec.6 not (necessarily) being met on DC volts ranges; old fashioned full disclosure! It's probable that most of the meters, when newish, DID meet the spec. anyway.
